Enjoy a real Lakeland break by engaging in some community activities in the Lakes. I wrote a few days ago about Ulverston’s Dickensian Festival and the switching on of Windermere’s Christmas lights. Here are a couple more activities to take part in this last weekend in November 2015.
Kendal is South Lakeland’s market and administrative town nearest to Bowness-on-Windermere, where we offer bed and breakfast accommodation at Blenheim Lodge. This weekend, starting on 27th November, the Brewery Arts Centre in Kendal will be hosting a Christmas craft market, showcasing ‘arts and crafts made by renowned Cumbrian designers and makers and features ceramics, textiles, glass, wooden boxes, jewellery, oil paintings and watercolours. The three-day event is an opportunity to purchase high quality Christmas gifts at affordable prices. There will also be live music and seasonal refreshments.’ (yourguide2thelakedistrict.co.uk/events/k/kendal-christmas-craft-market)

For more details about ‘Craft Market Kendal’ at the Brewery Arts Centre, please see www.breweryarts.co.uk/art/christmas-craft-fair. Meanwhile, whilst in Kendal, why not visit the Old and New Shambles, and other interesting historic sites in town? Kendal is a mere 10-15 minutes’ ride from Bowness-on-Windermere, and is well served by rail and bus links too.

The Lake District is of course also home to wonderful flora and fauna. Besides retail therapy and community events, how about initiating an acquaintance with the residents of Leighton Moss, an RSPB wildlife reserve? This weekend, there will be a ‘Binoculars and Telescopes Demonstration’ event at RSPB Leighton Moss.

Whether you are an avid birdwatcher in the Lake District or just enjoy watching the birds on your birdtable, this free event is an opportunity to try out binoculars, telescopes and digiscoping and receive impartial advice.
There will be an extensive range of optics to get your hands on and test out and experts from RSPB Optics will be on hand. Bring your own packed lunch to this event or use RSPB Leighton Moss’s own tea room.

(Leighton Moss is the largest reedbed in north-west England and home to some very special birds such as breeding bitterns, bearded tits and marsh harriers.)
