Villages

The Lake District teams with outdoor and indoor attractions to see and enjoy. For some suggestions about what to see in our beautiful National Park, see our information on Historic Homes & Gardens, Wildlife, Lakes & Landscapes, Villages or Attractions.

Bowness-on-Windermere

A bustling little place in the heart of the Lakes, Bowness has easy transport links, is the hub for Windermere Cruises, and provides a host of amenities and attractions.

Grasmere

A popular destination for sightseers, Grasmere is a pretty little village, the home of Grasmere Gingerbread, and famous for its Wordsworth connections.

Hawkshead

This picturesque village of cobbled streets and whitewashed cottages is also home to Beatrix Potter’s Gallery, formerly the legal offices of her husband, William Heelis.

Buttermere

The tiny hamlet of Buttermere is just 5 minutes’ walk to Buttermere itself, a beautiful lake a stone’s throw from Scale Force, the Lake District’s highest waterfall.

Coniston

On Coniston Water sits Coniston village, with a fell, The Old Man of Coniston, towering above. Donald Campbell broke the water speed record on Coniston in 1955.

Windermere

Since 1847, when the railway came to Windermere, it has remained the only place in the Lake District with external rail links, making it a major travel hub for visitors.

Keswick

A historic market town, Keswick, by Derwentwater, continues this tradition with general markets on Thursdays and Saturdays except when there are high winds.
