The Lake District is far from dull any time of the year. There is always the National Park to explore and enjoy, local attractions that open year round to visit, and special indoor and outdoor activities to engage in. And then, there are seasonal special events.
Tomorrow, 7th November, for instance, sees the start of a two-day Winter Market at Holker Hall. Visitors will be able to enjoy a carnival-like festive atmosphere as they ‘wander amongst a variety of stalls selling quality foods, crafts and gifts, whilst enjoying live music, hot food and street entertainment’. Meanwhile, Hayes Garden World, just a 10-15 minute ride from our guest house, Blenheim Lodge, also opens its German Christmas Market on Saturday, 7th November.

This year, together with our usual spectacular displays of lights, trees and wonderful Christmas decorations, you can experience the delights of our very own Traditional German Christmas Market.
Alongside stalls offering enchanting traditional decorations and crafts, you can sample some delicious German-inspired treats, (and, perhaps, a warming glass of Glühwein?), or simply enjoy soaking up the music and the Christkindlsmarkt atmosphere as the big day approaches. If you are game for any weather in the great outdoors, why not take part in the Lakeland Trails at Glenridding? This sporting event at Ullswater will afford runners and spectators alike an opportunity to marvel at the incredible beauty of this part of the Lake District National Park:
Starting from the Ullswater Pier at Glenridding (CA11 OUS), your journey starts with a beautiful half hour cruise aboard the Ullswater Steamer “Raven”, which takes you to the start in the hamlet of Howtown, whilst being serenaded by singer/songwriter Pete Lashley. The 10km Ullswater Trail Run, 14km Ullswater Trail Race and 14km Ullswater Trail Challenge follow well marked and marshalled footpaths and bridleways along the lake shore, giving panoramic views of Helvellyn and the surrounding peaks, finishing in Jenkins Field, next to the Ullswater Pier. Much of the course passes through ancient woodland, which will be at its autumnal best. . . .
A carnival atmosphere is guaranteed for both spectators and competitors, with live music, race commentary, food and drink all available at the start and finish. So, whether you’re new to trail running, an experienced athlete, or simply looking for an unforgettable day out in the Lake District, a family-friendly, festival atmosphere and some amazing trail running awaits you!
