We live in Bowness-on-Windermere, a mere 5-minute walk to the shores of Windermere. However, over the years, Windermere, the lake, has become known as ‘Lake Windermere’, which makes some language purists cringe. Windermere itself is a town about 1 mile distant from the Lake, so there isn’t actually a lake in Windermere itself.

Bowness-on-Windermere, often called ‘Bowness’ by locals and visitors alike, is often mistaken for the town of Windermere, except that it is located on the shores of Windermere, hence the name, Bowness (the town) on (as in located by) Windermere (the lake). The ‘mere’ part of ‘Windermere’ refers to the body of water, Winder or Winander. There is an interesting article in Wikipedia regarding the origins of the name, ‘Windermere’. Bowness-on-Windermere’s main attraction is of course the lake, Windermere, England’s largest lake at 10.5 miles long. From our guest house, Blenheim Lodge, it is but a short stroll to the lake and its environs. Indeed, our guest house overlooks Lake Windermere and our guest rooms offer some amazingly stunning views of the lake and fells.

We have had some lovely days recently, and yesterday was no different, so Hubby suggested a short stroll by Windermere. As usual, the lake was looking beautiful and I took a photo as we strolled leisurely near and along its shores.

Only 5 minutes from where we have our Bed and Breakfast, Blenheim Lodge, is Lake Windermere. The day was fine so we went for a short walk along its shores on 15th February 2016.
