Recently, we made contact with Eric Hope, a top angler who came to visit us one sunny December afternoon. Eric owns Hemmingways Fishing and offers guided angling trips and fishing tuition in Cumbria. This is what he says on his website:

We catch and release a wide variety of fish, including some superb salmon and sea trout, wild brown trout, lots of monster pike, a pot or two of charr, and some huge perch. You might even have seen us on TV with our friend Matt Hayes or even on the BBC and ITV News.

Eric takes his customers out to fish many waters in the Lake District, including Windermere, which is the lake that our guest house, Blenheim Lodge, overlooks. In fact, we are only minutes’ walk to the pier in Bowness-on-Windermere, where guests can enjoy dangling a rod close by if they do not wish to fish other waters in the Lake District. Apropos to this, Blenheim Lodge also offers two FREE local fishing permits to our guests on a first come first served basis.

Blenheim Lodge has seen a number of guests staying with us who would like to try their hand at fishing but who do not have the confidence or know-how to go about it. If you are one of them, we can help arrange a session with Eric for you. He can provide the whole package, including tackle and other fishing gear so you need not worry about those items. On the other hand, if you are an enthusiastic angler who simply wants a great day out where the waters are fishing well, we can also help arrange fishing trips with Eric for you, using either your own equipment or his. Small fishing groups can also be accommodated, and boat fishing is available where appropriate. As Eric says, ‘All you really need are an Environment Agency licence for the day available either on line or from any post office, suitable footwear and a waterproof although the odd snack for the guide is always appreciated!’ You can also, by prior arrangement, book a shoreline lunch if you prefer!

Eric’s page will tempt the inveterate angler to try his or her luck in Cumbria’s beautiful waters. Imagine spending a relaxing day with friends or family (including youngsters) amidst incredible scenery. Spectacular mountains and glittering lakes are a trademark of the Lake District National Park throughout the seasons. And, yes, guests have a choice of species to fish during the different seasons.

So, whether you are a budding or keen angler, why not contact us at Blenheim Lodge to book a ‘Stay and Fish’ vacation? We have en-suite rooms with amazing lake and fell views for double, single, twin and triple occupancy, and would be delighted to help you get the most out of your stay, not just with the fishing, but with other aspects as well: from country pursuits to sightseeing, to enjoying the historical narratives that this pulchritudinous part of the world called the Lake District National Park has to offer.
