I LOVE chocolates. I like chocolates with a smooth texture; chocolates with nuts; chocolates infused with alcoholic flavours; rich dark chocolates with character . . . the list goes on. And I especially enjoy good chocolates carefully handmade with care and attention.

Just this weekend past, we went to visit a chocolate maker to buy some of their chocolates for our Bed and Breakfast. We had corresponded with them initially and were very pleased with the information they gave us about their chocolates. For example, we found out that all their chocolates are handmade to order. We also realised that it is a smallish family business, and we like supporting small family businesses. The other thing we discovered was that they make a huge variety of chocolates, which means that we have more to choose from for our ballotins.

A Black Watch tartan ribbon, a sticker that proclaims these chocolate truffles to be handmade in Scotland, and a photo of Blenheim Lodge, our B and B, tells a quick tale of the Scottish man and his wife who now run a Lake District Bed and Breakfast called Blenheim Lodge in Cumbria.

So, having tried out the chocolates – all truffles, if you please, as we think truffles are deliciously, romantically, smooth – we succumbed and bought a couple of outers for our guest house. This means that if our guests wish to buy chocolates to have in place for their special someones, we can have the ballotins awaiting them in their rooms for arrival. Picture a set up where you have a ballotin of chocolates, a bouquet of flowers or a single rose beautifully gift wrapped, and a bottle of wine or champagne and you get the picture – a lovely romantic gesture in a relaxing romantic retreat!

So, if you are looking to celebrate or create a little romance, why not consider the chocolate lover in each of us and wrap your romantic treat up with chocolates, flowers and bubbly together with a pretty room overlooking Lake Windermere or the fells? What a lovely surprise that would be for your special someone. Now, I wonder, would a cute cuddly teddy also add a special touch to that loving romantic break?
