I remember one year eons ago, when we brought our kids to the Lake District for a week’s holiday. They were at that time only 1.5 and 4 years of age, and the former was still in pull-ups. Hubby and I had taken time out during the Easter holiday period, and were looking forward to visiting the Lakes, and introducing the children to country pursuits such as horse riding, boating and fishing. I also wanted to take the older child to the Postman Pat house as he was a fan. Then, there were the steam train rides which I thought they might enjoy.

We stayed in the Lakes for 7 nights. And each day it rained almost continuously. Hailing from Scotland as we do, the incessant rain did not put us off. Instead, we waited for semi-clear days before taking the kids horse riding and fishing. Otherwise, we took shelter in the various museums and shops galore. All in all, we had a wonderful time: despite the damp chill that comes with constant rainfall, we managed to do everything we wanted to do during our week’s holiday.

During May and June fish can be all over the fishery but return to the deeps as the water temperatures rise in mid summer, returning to forage in the shallows as autumn brings cooler conditions. (Words and photo courtesy of www.lakedistrictfishing.net/WADAA-waters)

Now that we live in the Lake District and run our Bed and Breakfast, Blenheim Lodge, we often hope that people will not be put off by the 4 seasons that can occur within a day in the Lakes. The Lake District would not be lovely and green, picturesque with stunning lakes, if it were not for the precipitation that keeps them topped up. Besides, there is so much to do in the Lakes, that one does not need to be out of doors all the time in order to enjoy its charms.

This gorgeous view can be seen from most of our bedrooms at Blenheim Lodge, as well as from the lounge and porch. One Japanese visitor, an artist, painted this view as a keepsake of their visit to our guest house.

One thing we try to encourage potential guests to do is to stay a little longer in the Lakes. We know from experience that there is just so much to see and do, and that it would be very easy indeed to fill a week or more with activities. Moreover, many people enjoy coming to the Lakes because they want to relax . . . taking things at their own pace.

At Blenheim Lodge, we offer weekly rates of 7 or more nights’ stay to our guests which are lower than our winter rates. Although these tariffs are not applicable during Valentine’s Day, public holiday weekends and dates, they are available throughout the rest of the year. Generally, the savings to be made range from £67 per person to £150 per person when considering what one might save over a week’s break. That is pretty good value!
