The Lake District is such a special place because of how it looks and what it symbolises. When one thinks of the Lake District, the image is one of outstanding physical beauty and peaceful serenity. The Lake District is still very much a place of retreat where one can enjoy its marvellous landscapes; but it is also home to lively communities in towns and villages, which locals enjoy sharing with their many visitors.

One of the most enduring images of the Lakes is that of a Lakeland stone cottage set against the spectacular backdrop of high mountains in splendid isolation. It presents a romanticised ideal of the rural escape where the comforting warmth found in a pretty cottage is matched with relaxed meandering walks in the wide open spaces as one communes with nature.

The Lake District is of course famous for its many beautiful meres, tarns and lakes. The deepest of these is Wastwater at 258 feet and the largest is Windermere at 10.5 miles. Artists and photographers chase after the unique quality of light which characterises the Lake District’s seasons. See the effects of this illumination:

Albert Wainwright, the famous Lake District walker, was captivated by its high fells. A quote on the placard for Orrest Head, off the A591 trunk road, quotes him as saying, ‘Those few hours on Orrest Head cast a spell that changed my life.’

The Lake District is epitomised by its quiet charm, where one can hear oneself think. Combine this with its resplendent landscapes, and it is a match made in heaven! No wonder so many people come to the Lakes for a tranquil escape.

Others prefer their getaways to include the excellent amenities that our Lakeland towns and villages have to offer. Settlements have grown up around a number of lakes, and one of these is Bowness-on-Windermere. Blenheim Lodge nestles into acres of countryside and is a mere 5-minute walk into the centre of Bowness town. Stay with us and enjoy the best of both worlds!
